The Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport was conceived through the desire of Ford (The Land Rover Marque's owner) to compete in the "sports 4x4" market. The new model was designed specifically to directly compete with the BMW X5, the Porsche Cayenne and the Mercedes ML range. The concept was simple in theory. The Range Rover Sport was to equal performance with these other 4x4's whilst completely dominating them off-road; a prowess The Land Rover name was now synonymous with.

The all new Range Rover Sport model was officially unveiled in November 2004 and was based on the Discovery III platform. It uses the same hybrid chassis and body construction, while being a little lower overall and shorter by around 6 inches. The sleek, stylish body design has echoes of traditional Range Rover styling with features like the clamshell style bonnet.

The sleeker, lighter design on the Range Rover Sport results in better overall performance on-road than the Discovery, thanks in no small part to the truly breathtaking 4.2 litre, supercharged V8 engine option. With a top speed of around 140Mph, it's still not quite up to the task of out performing the Porsche offering but try taking the Cayenne off the tarmac and you quickly learn to Porsche's dismay, that power isn't everything.

For people wanting a more economical version of this magnificent, go anywhere vehicle the 2.7 TDV6 diesel engine is available as an alternative to the supercharged, fire breathing monster option.

Overall, the Range Rover Sport has achieved, and surpassed the design specification that was originally set. The end result is an outstanding blend of high performance luxury, coupled with an off-road prowess that, although not as agile as the Discovery III, none of the other manufacturers in this market can even come close to competing with.
